  The term 'cult' is oftentimes used to describe fringe, apocalyptic, counter-cultural groups that withdraw from society. But this is not always the case.

  Some mainstream religions, deemed harmless and law-abiding, are nothing more than cults, using tactics that lead to profound psychological distress among members.

  One such group is Jehovah's Witnesses, according to cult expert and counsellor, Raphael Aron, director of cult consulting in Australia, and author of Cults Too Good To Be True.

  Extreme emotions re today's watchtower

  i was supposed to attend the meeting today, one of my once a month duties for the sake of my family and my fade.

  i read the wt and i just can't stomach going.... what this wt does is again and again reiterate that only jws will survive the coming destruction and that they should be happy about this and raise ourselves erect...eg:.

  we cannot expect that many people will suddenly convert to true christianity.

  If you can read all this without strong emotions of disgust anger or anxiety/fear, (if you believe it that is).. Congratulations, you are a brainwashed sociopath.

  How appropriate that all false religion is likened to a prostitute! The clergy have prostituted themselves with the leaders of this wicked world.

  Instead of loyally supporting Jesus and his Kingdom, they have given their support to human rulers and have compromised godly principles just to gain political influence. They stand in stark contrast with the clean, virginlike anointed ones of God.

  But who will destroy the harlotlike organization? Jehovah God will put “his thought” into the hearts of “the ten horns” of the “scarlet-colored wild beast.” These horns represent all the present political powers that give support to the United Nations, an organization pictured by the “scarlet-colored wild beast.”
  

  Should we conclude, though, that the destruction of the religions of Babylon the Great results in the death of all the former members of those religions? Apparently not... So, apparently, even some of the clergy will abandon their religious course and deny that they were ever part of those false religions.
  

  
  

  8 Although we do not fully understand all that will happen during that time of test, we can expect that it will involve some measure of sacrifice. In the first century, Christians had to leave behind their possessions and endure hardships in order to survive. (Mark 13:15-18) To remain faithful, will we be willing to experience material loss? Will we be ready to do whatever is required of us to prove our loyalty to Jehovah?

  
  

  9 This will not be the time to preach the “good news of the Kingdom.” That time will have passed. The time for “the end” will have come! (Matt. 24:14)

  No doubt God’s people will proclaim a hard-hitting judgment message. This may well involve a declaration announcing that Satan’s wicked world is about to come to its complete end.

  
  

  10 None of this will go unnoticed by our enemies. Under inspiration, the prophet Ezekiel explains what Gog of Magog, a coalition of nations, will do.. Spiritually speaking, God’s people will stand out as unique, “in the center of the earth,” as it were.

  
  

  This will be too much for the nations. Yes, they will be eager to attack Jehovah’s anointed ones as well as their associates.

  13 How will the goats react when they realize that “everlasting cutting-off” awaits them? They “will beat themselves in grief.” (Matt. 24:30)
  

  But how will Christ’s brothers and their faithful companions react at that time? With full faith in Jehovah God and his Son, Jesus Christ, they will heed Jesus’ command: “As these things start to occur, stand up straight and lift up your heads, because your deliverance is getting near.” (Luke 21:28) Yes, we will have a positive attitude, confident of deliverance.
  

  ..Together with his 144,000 corulers in heaven, Jesus will come to the rescue of God’s people here on earth.
  

  The resulting war of Armageddon will lead to the magnifying of Jehovah’s holy name. (Rev. 16:16) At that time, all goatlike ones “will depart into everlasting cutting-off.”

  The earth will finally be cleansed of all wickedness, and the great crowd will pass through the final part of the great tribulation.
  

  
  

  All those surviving on the earth will bask in God’s favor and experience bounteous expressions of his love. What a marriage feast that will be! Do we not look forward to that day with eager expectation?

  [Jesus has just described the pangs of distress, the great tribulation, signs in heaven, and the coming of the Son of Man]

  33 Likewise also you, when you see all these things, know that he is near at the doors.

  34 Truly I say to you that this generation will by no means pass away until all these things happen.
  

  *Who was Jesus speaking to?

  *Who did he expect to understand the signs, and to know what they meant?

  *What are 'all these things' in verses 33 and 34?

  (Hint: read the whole chapter, especially Jesus' reply from verse 4 onward.)

  *Was Jesus speaking about 'that generation' (a different group in the future)... Or did he say 'this generation' (present tense)?

  because of their beliefs they have a moral compass, a net work of friends and a support group.

  Would I be better off for my family just to try to make them better Christians then to try to wake them up to the fact that it's all a lie?
  

  You don't need to 'make' anybody into anything.

  I'm not having a go at you, you understand? I am just making an observation on your thought process.

  We don't need to change anyone's thinking. We just speak the truth as we know it, based on our knowledge of the Bible and the world.

  If people get distressed when we tell them things that are true, that is their problem.

  Or perhaps I should say: 'that is the problem with their culture , the JW culture which ignores reality and even the Bible itself'.

  To me, the Governing Body even discussing different meanings of the word 'generation' is utterly pointless.

  The time period that Jesus was referring to, ie his contemporaries, is the only thing that matters..

  You can sit and change generation definitions all day, the Bible itself shows that Jesus was talking about his generation. Any reasonable person can see that from reading Matthew, Mark and Luke's accounts.

  ..the disciples supposing that when the destruction of Jerusalem should take place, then would be the coming of Christ and the end of the world.. or, the conclusion of the age, as συντελεια του αιωνος should rather be translated here, and often signifies.

  The rest of your post is basically off-topic, about the Bible being untrustworthy, which is obvious to us.. but a JW won't listen, they believe Gods spirit told the writers what was said and preserved Gods word intact. That kind of talk will not get through to a Jehovah's Witness, and that was the whole point of my starting this thread. It was most likely a waste of time I guess..
  There must be a million threads on here about the Bible not being divinely inspired and trustworthy.I was attempting to provide people with a step-by-step reasoning process to use with JW's, using just the Bible and possibly some of the Bible commentary from the article.. that would move any thoughtful JW to acknowledge that absolutely nothing in the text ITSELF indicates Jesus was talking about a generation nearly 2000 years later...
  The Bible does not in any way support that conclusion (if you read it for yourself without a need to make it say something it does not).That should be enough to debunk the Governing Body's claims that only they are authorised to interpret the Bible correctly.They apparently refuse to even study the Bible without bias or their own agenda.

  Please, remember that this topic is mainly for the benefit of lurkers.

  Please withhold any drawing of conclusions as to Jesus as a prophet, or anything in that direction. I want people to read this comfortably and just think, not have any beliefs attacked. (I hope you understand my meaning).

  Finally, please feel free to share this post anywhere and everywhere, if you like it.

  It may be helpful to some having dicussions with overlapping generation believers in the future.. Who knows. ;)
